Editorial Standards

CBA National is the official periodical of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), a non-profit, member-driven professional association. The CBA funds the magazine through its Canadian Bar Foundation, a charitable organization that promotes legal education and knowledge, access to justice, and community engagement on legal issues.

National covers legal affairs in Canada, taking in-depth dives into legislation, jurisprudence, and legal issues, following the latest trends and developments affecting the legal profession and practice of law, and sharing the latest news regarding the CBA and its activities. Our aim is to inform the Canadian legal community and the broader public in a manner consistent with the CBA’s mission

National is a bilingual publication, with most content available in English and French. For the sake of timeliness, stories may be first posted in the language in which they were written, with translation to follow.

We’re committed to ensuring the accuracy of all information in National’s reporting. When we make a mistake, we promptly correct it.

Words inside quotation marks are an accurate representation of what was written or said. Hesitations and repetitions can be omitted, and grammatical errors corrected, provided there is no risk of altered meaning.

When working on a story, reporters are expected to identify themselves to sources and make clear that they are creating content for publication.

In the interest of fairness, we strive to include a diverse range of voices and provide reasonable accounts of competing perspectives, with emphasis on those informed by legal expertise. Opinion pieces are clearly labelled as such.

Neither the views expressed in the magazine nor the magazine’s editorial decisions necessarily reflect the views or priorities of the CBA.
