Increase access to important decisions in both official languages
The CBA's French-Speaking Common Law Members Section wants continued funding for the Moncton University translation centre.
In a letter (available only in French) to the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques at the Université de Moncton, the Canadian Bar Association’s French-Speaking Common Law Members Section seeks to increase the number of important court decisions that are available in both official languages in each province and territory of Canada.
According to the Section, “there can be no real equality in access to justice in Canada if case law is not available to litigants in both official languages of the country.” The CTTJ Project should also be expanded to cover several more areas of law, in addition to family law and criminal law. In particular, the CTTJ should focus on decisions in bankruptcy and insolvency law.
“For these reasons, the Section enthusiastically supports the CTTJ Project and encourages the Department of Justice to resume its financial support for the CTTJ Project.”
